On January 3, Waste Pro’s Meridian, Mississippi Division bid farewell to long-time employee Larry Pierce, who retired after 10 years with the company.
Prior to his career in the waste industry, Pierce served in the United States Navy from 1976-1980, then spent a few years working at Sara Lee Bakery making pies and cakes. Then, around 25 years ago, Pierce decided to change things up.
“I saw a lot of guys telling me how good the garbage industry was, so I wanted to try it out for myself,” he said.
Pierce spent 15 years working for a national garbage hauler before joining Waste Pro’s Meridian Division in 2010. In that time, he became well known by the residents along his routes, often receiving gifts during the holiday season.
“Pierce has been a model employee,” said Central Mississippi Divisional Vice President Rodney Street.
In 2019, Pierce became one of Waste Pro’s first helpers to receive the $5,000 Helper Safety Performance Bonus, which is awarded to helpers go three years without unscheduled absences, customer complaints, property or vehicle damage, rule violations, or driver-caused breakdowns.
Pierce used the award to splurge on his five children, 20 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Though Pierce will be spending more time with his family now in his retirement, he isn’t going away from Waste Pro forever.
“I appreciate all of my supervisors, they’re all very good people. I enjoyed my time at Waste Pro. I’ll be visiting,” he said.
On his last day, Street and Meridian Division Manager Terry Davidson awarded Pierce with a plaque and $100 Franklin Award for his service.
